Many of the advances were made by Soviet army doctors who saved an incredible number of lives as a result of medical care. 72,3% of injured and 90,6% of sick soldiers recovered and returned to service. Predecessor institutions of NWSMU - Leningrad State Postgraduate Medical Institute headed by Ilya Saulovich Vainberg and the Second Leningrad Medical Institute headed by Rafail Iosifovich Meerovich made a significant contribution to medical progress during the war. 560 army doctors graduated from the Second Leningrad Medical Institute on June 24, 1941. In September 1941 1041 doctors graduated ahead of schedule and 330 doctors graduated in December. 1273 academics from the Second Leningrad Medical Institute and 301 academics from Leningrad State Postgraduate Medical Institute were sent to the battlefield at the beginning of the war. The largest hospital of the Leningrad Front № 2222 occupied several buildings of the Second Leningrad Medical Institute during WWII. Over 310 thousand Soviet soldiers and 1200 prisoners of war were treated in the hospital. 70% of badly wounded soldiers were treated in hospital № 78, which settled down in Leningrad State Postgraduate Medical Institute. More than 881 academics and students of the Second Leningrad Medical Institute and Leningrad State Postgraduate Medical Institute died during the war.
Siege of Leningrad
Leningrad State Postgraduate Medical Institute and the Second Leningrad Medical Institute continued to work even during the Siege of Leningrad which lasted for almost 900 days, from September 1941 to January 1944. Nearly 630 thousand citizens died during the Siege of Leningrad, known as one of the longest and most destructive sieges in modern history. According to some estimates, as many as 1.5 million people became victims of the siege due to starvation and as a result of numerous bomb attacks.
